Orbituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Minnie Wang, our loving mother and devoted friend to many, on the evening of April 24, 2020.

Minnie passed away peacefully at the age of 90 at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, IL, surrounded by her children and loved ones.

Minnie was born on December 29th, 1930, in Shanghai, China. In 1948, she married her late husband, Stephen Wang, and raised four children together.

The family immigrated to the US in 1979, where they immediately made a substantial impact on the community.

Minnie was a truly rare woman, both beautiful on the inside and out. Her elegant demeanor, strong character and exuberance for life was admired by many. She will be remembered for her kindness, selflessness, and unwavering generosity to others.

As the President and co-founder of the Shanghai Benevolent Association and a major leader in the Chicago Chinese community, she could often be found hosting events for visiting scholars, helping foreign students, finding job placements for community members, hosting community functions at her restaurants, and bringing joy into the lives of friends and strangers, alike. She devoted much of her time volunteering at senior centers and contributing to many different causes.

Minnie was also a wonderful chef, and entrepreneur who ran a chain of Shanghainese restaurants across the Midwest, adorned by her namesake, Shanghai Minnie’s. She cooked much as she lived, with passion, care, and love, always feeding her family, friends, and community members at the many events she hosted throughout her life.

Minnie was gregarious, with a social grace that came from putting everyone at ease. She was always smiling, and brought warmth and comfort to every life she touched, even up to her last moments in this world. She was a beacon of tenderness and affection to so many. We will miss you greatly, and you will live on in our hearts forever.

Minnie is survived by her children Jones and Jennifer Wang, Maureen and Robert Birtcher, Sally Hose, Louise and Milton Ni; grandchildren Daniel Wang, Glenn Wang, Lily Wang, Raymond and Shelby Birtcher, Ben Hose, David Hose, Amanda Ni, Christopher Ni, Alyssa Ni; great-grandchildren Grant Birtcher, Emersyn Birtcher.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held in the near future.
